Here Comes Google TV… But TV Industry Not Going Away Anytime Soon: Blodget · Daily Ticker

The rush to remake the way you watch TV has a new competitor. And it's a big one.

The Wall Street Journal says Google (GOOG) has approached media companies about licensing their content for Internet TV. Perhaps more intriguing, the WSJ story says: "In at least one case, Google has provided a demonstration of the product, according to a person who saw the demonstration."

"I think they have the capacity to put a huge amount of money in to it," says The Daily Ticker's Henry Blodget. "The long-term future of television is obvious... you watch what you want to watch when you want to watch it." However, Blodget says that future might be 5, 10, even 20 years away. Until then, cable TV companies do a pretty good job of making it easy to find something to watch.

Whatever Google has come up with, they face plenty of competition. Technology companies like Apple (AAPL), Intel (INTC) and Sony (SNE) are already developing cable TV-style packages for broadband. Intel will likely debut their service (it might be called OnCue) by the end of the year.

No matter what happens, and what these services look like, it's an exciting time to be a TV junkie. Get ready to be entertained.
