Dive Brief:

  • Burger King has partnered with Walmart to provide an exclusive dining benefit for Walmart+ members, the companies said Thursday in a press release.

  • Walmart+ members now receive a daily 25% discount on Burger King digital orders. Beginning in September, members will also receive a free Whopper every three months with any purchase.

  • The collaboration with Walmart could help boost Burger King’s same-store sales, which were relatively flat in Q2 2024.

Dive Insight:

While Grubhub and Uber Eats have partnered with Amazon and Instacart, respectively, this appears to be the first time a major restaurant chain has partnered with a retail membership program. Walmart+ has over 50 million members, giving Burger King significant exposure to new and lapsed customers. Walmart has been growing its benefits of late and has partnerships with Expedia and Paramount+.

To activate the Burger King benefit, Walmart+ members will need to link their account to an existing Burger King Royal Perks account or create a new account for free. Then, members can use the offers on the BK app or at bk.com, select a participating location and add the offer to the cart.

“Burger King has long been known for offering Guests high quality products for a great value – an approach that’s shared by our friends at Walmart, making this partnership a natural fit,” Pat O’Toole, CMO at Burger King North America, said in the press release.

Walmart+ is available for $98 per year or $12.95 per month and provides digital and in-store benefits like free delivery from store, free shipping with no order minimum, and gas and travel discounts, among others.

In addition to boosting awareness, Burger King has been investing millions of dollars toward remodels, which have helped boost sales at the renovated stores in the mid-teens. About 150 locations have undergone a remodel and have been open for at least six months. The brand expects to complete 400 remodels in 2024 and have updated 85% to 90% of U.S. stores to the modern image by the end of 2028.

Walmart has also been boosting its in-store foodservice offerings and recently partnered with several chains, including Crave Hot Dogs & BBQ, Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, Knuckies Hoagies and Uncle Sharkii Poke Bar.
