GOP Senator: Mexico tariff issue will be 'resolved over the next 48-72 hours'

Tariffs on imports from Mexico are set to begin June 10 if Mexico doesn’t take action to stem the flow of migrants and illegal drugs to the U.S., President Trump has warned.

As negotiators from Mexico meet with U.S. officials on Wednesday to hash out a deal, Sen. Cory Gardner, an influential voice on both the Senate Commerce and the Foreign Relations committees, is optimistic the matter will be resolved soon.

"I think you will see this issue resolved over the next 48-72 hours," Gardner said.

Trump might not like the resolution, though.

The president has repeatedly stood by his plan to impose 5% across the board tariffs on Mexico in the face of bipartisan opposition. Earlier Wednesday, the president said, “I think Mexico has to step up. And if they don’t, tariffs will go on.” Earlier, he tweeted “no bluff!” responding to skepticism that he would follow through.

The remarks from the Colorado senator came during an appearance on Yahoo Finance’s “YFi PM.” The senator added that the tariffs "are bad policy, they are a tax on the American consumer."

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell, a staunch ally of the president, told reporters recently that "there's not much support in my conference for tariffs, that's for sure."

Gardner agreed saying, "if this were to come to a vote, there wouldn't be much support at all out of the United States Senate for a tariff."

Trump has also tweeted support from a top Republican on the other side of the Capitol. California Rep. Kevin McCarthy has suggested House Republicans would back the president.
