Sheffield Hallam students to design for Deliveroo
In This Article:
Students at Sheffield Hallam University are set to partner with online food delivery company Deliveroo to design new sustainable packaging.
The students, William Shaw and Josephine Cooper, developed a packaging solution that can adapt an existing rectangular box product.
The packaging comes with creative updates including a new sealing system that leverages additional folds in the cardboard.
The design utilises a PLA lined carton board for the lid, employing BioPak's BioBoard material, and is based on an existing packaging format.
The new design won a competition, which was organised by Deliveroo and supported by sustainable packaging company, BioPak.
The challenge set before the students at the Sheffield Hallam University Packaging Professional BSc programme was to develop sustainable, spill-proof, temperature-maintaining, and cost-effective food packaging.
Judges at the competition concluded that the design could be produced without incurring significant additional costs, making it a competitive option for restaurants and ready for immediate production discussions.
The student team can now enter exclusive discussions with BioPak to bring their successful design to market.
The aim is for the packaging to be available for purchase by restaurant partners through Deliveroo's packaging webstore.
This initiative is part of Deliveroo's broader efforts to encourage sustainable practices among its restaurant partners, including a £2.5m ($3.26m) packaging fund to subsidise environmentally friendly packaging items.
Deliveroo packaging head Jen Bagshaw said: “We’re always looking for new and innovative solutions to big challenges, and that’s why we’re so incredibly excited to partner with these talented students in Sheffield Hallam to support the next generation of packaging design that really puts sustainability at its heart.
“By celebrating creativity and giving them the initial backing to get off the ground, we’re looking forward to working with the winners to encourage a solution that’s sustainable and doesn’t come at a significant cost for businesses in the delivery sector.”
