United asks pilots to take unpaid time off, cites Boeing delays
United Airlines (UAL) is asking pilots to take unpaid time off due to plane delivery delays from Boeing (BA). In a statement to Yahoo Finance, United says "We can confirm that due to the recent delays in Boeing deliveries, our forecasted block hours for 2024 have been reduced and we are offering our pilots voluntary programs for the month of May to reduce excess staffing."
United is just one of the airlines being impacted by the issues at Boeing, which stem from an incident earlier this year where a door plug on a 737 Max 9 aircraft blew off mid-flight.
In the video above, Yahoo Finance's Josh Lipton and Julie Hyman discuss the latest news from United.

JOSH LIPTON: United Airlines edging lower in today's trade. The news here, they're asking pilots to take unpaid time off next month, Julie. And apparently, this could actually extend into the summer, maybe even the fall.
And this is because the carrier is dealing with these delayed deliveries of planes from Boeing. So you need fewer pilots if you have fewer planes. Reports from United was going to receive 80 max tens this year. Part of this outstanding order with Boeing for 277 of the planes.
JULIE HYMAN: Yeah, and Boeing wasn't the worst performer in the Dow today. But it was among the worst performers in the Dow today. Because, obviously, this is just the continued sort of drumbeat of negative sentiment surrounding that stock and the slump that it's seen.
And now, of course, the impending departure of the CEO. So this is sort of just incrementally more negative news and more revelations about the ripple effect and how pivotal Boeing is for the airline industry.
