Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has urged law authorities to look into Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and SpaceX (SPACE) CEO Elon Musk for his offer in offering $1 million daily until Election Day for voters who sign an online petition supporting the First and Second Amendments. Musk presented cheques to two people at different Trump events over the weekend.
Legal experts have pointed out that paying people in hopes of influencing or rewarding them to register or cast votes is illegal at federal level. Campaign finance attorney Brendan Fischer claimed that the most recent Musk giveaway strategy approaches a legal limit. That's so since the petition requires registration to qualify for the $1 million payout. "If every Pennsylvania-based petition signer were eligible, there would be few questions regarding the legality; but, conditioning the payments on registration arguably violates the law," Fischer advised the Associated Press.
"I'm the governor, not the attorney general anymore of Pennsylvania, but it does raise some major issues," Governor Shapiro said on the gifts. Elon Musk reportedly called Shapiro earlier in the month to discuss Pennsylvania investment. Early trading on Monday shows Tesla's stock fell 1.4%; since the robotaxi event on October 10, the stock is down almost 10%.
