Are TAT Technologies Ltd.'s (NASDAQ:TATT) Fundamentals Good Enough to Warrant Buying Given The Stock's Recent Weakness?

In This Article:

TAT Technologies (NASDAQ:TATT) has had a rough three months with its share price down 4.6%. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. In this article, we decided to focus on TAT Technologies' ROE.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for TAT Technologies is:

5.2% = US$4.7m ÷ US$91m (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated $0.05 in profit.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

TAT Technologies' Earnings Growth And 5.2% ROE

When you first look at it, TAT Technologies' ROE doesn't look that attractive. We then compared the company's ROE to the broader industry and were disappointed to see that the ROE is lower than the industry average of 14%. However, we we're pleasantly surprised to see that TAT Technologies grew its net income at a significant rate of 25% in the last five years. We reckon that there could be other factors at play here. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that TAT Technologies' growth is quite high when compared to the industry average growth of 6.2% in the same period, which is great to see.
