Why Elon Musk still has 'huge' influence over govt. without Trump

Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has been public in his support for Donald Trump, joining the former President on the campaign trail. Musk pledged $1 million daily to voters in swing states who sign a petition from America PAC, his super-PAC. The Justice Department reportedly sent Musk a letter saying the $1 million giveaway may be against the law. The billionaire's political activities have raised some concerns about conflicts of interest, given his business ties to the government. New York Times investigative reporter David Fahrenthold sits down with Catalysts Hosts Seana Smith and Madison Mills to discuss these potential conflicts of interest between Musk and his political ties.

Fahrenthold says, Musk “has more than 300 ongoing contracts with the federal government” and “more than 20 ongoing investigations by the federal government of his businesses. In both those cases, if he comes in a role where he's now overseeing his customers and his regulators, you can see the incredible conflicts of interest that would result.”

“No matter who wins this election, [Musk is] going to have a huge amount of influence over the federal government, and that is most true in the world of space because his company, SpaceX, basically dictates when NASA and the Defense Department launch their satellites.”
