TotalEnergies has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Saint-Gobain to supply renewable electricity to the latter's facilities in France.

This agreement, set to commence in January 2026, will span five years and deliver a total volume of 875GWh of clean energy.

Under the terms of the PPA, TotalEnergies will ensure a baseload supply of electricity to Saint-Gobain, complete with guarantees of origin.

The energy will be sourced from TotalEnergies' wind and solar plants in the north-east and south of France, as well as the Loire Valley.

TotalEnergies Flexible Power and Integration vice-president Sophie Chevalier said: “We are delighted with this new contract with Saint-Gobain, a sign of our shared commitment to take carbon out of French industry.

“It also demonstrates our ability to offer electricity solutions that meet our client’s needs while ensuring the origin of the green electricity provided.

“In France, TotalEnergies has a renewable portfolio of over 2GW, preventing the emission into the atmosphere of 800,000 tons of CO? every year. That is a persuasive argument for our customers.”

This contract builds upon an existing partnership between the two companies that began in June 2023 with an agreement for Saint-Gobain to purchase biomethane from TotalEnergies' BioBéarn facility.

The new PPA is a continuation of TotalEnergies' strategy to forge similar agreements with other major corporations like Air Liquide, Amazon, LyondellBasell, Merck, Microsoft, Orange and Sasol.

Saint-Gobain Group energy purchasing director Swaroop Srinath said: “Saint-Gobain is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Realising this ambition involves decarbonising our production processes.

“This contract signed with TotalEnergies allows the Group to take a further step toward this goal with a reliable and continuous supply of renewable electricity for our industrial sites.

“With this PPA, combined with others signed by the Group in France, 30% of the electricity will be from renewable sources in France by 2027.”

Last December, TotalEnergies announced plans to construct a hybrid renewable energy project in South Africa.
