Sen. Mark Kelly reacts to Trump’s CHIPS Act criticism

As we approach the final days of the 2024 election cycle between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, a topic that has made its way into news headlines is the CHIPS and Science Act. The piece of legislation, which was signed into law in 2022 under President Joe Biden, provides funds to support the domestic production of semiconductors and authorizes various programs and activities of the federal science agencies. In a recent interview former President Trump criticized the act, saying, “that CHIPS deal is so bad.”

This week Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) joins Capitol Gains to discuss the CHIPS and Science Act and how it is impacting his state.

Though Sen. Kelly, an author of the bill, hasn’t spoken about the former president’s remarks directly to companies impacted by the legislation, he is concerned about what reelecting Trump could mean for the semiconductor industry.

“This would be incredibly damaging to our economy here in Arizona and in other states,” Sen. Kelly says. “When you consider the scope and breadth of semiconductor manufacturing and what we’re trying to do here, it would also be damaging to national security.”
