10,000 US hotel workers strike as contract talks break down

STORY: Some 10,000 U.S. hotels workers went on strike Sunday (September 1). That’s after talks broke down with operators including Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton. The Unite Here union - which represents workers at hotels, casinos and the like - said walkouts were under way across the country. It released these pictures shot in Greenwich, Connecticut. The strike comes as the industry faces a surge in travel over the Labor Day weekend. Unite Here says hotel workers are being stretched thin following pandemic-era job cuts. It’s also demanding better pay. Hilton said it remained committed to negotiating a fair deal, while Hyatt said it had contingency plans in place to minimise the impact. There was no comment from Marriott. The union has urged travellers to cancel bookings at hotels where strikes are taking place, and to demand penalty-free refunds. Around 40,000 workers it represents face expiring contracts this year, with negotiations on new four-year deals under way for months. Last year, the union won record new contracts in Los Angeles and Detroit following walkouts.
